History students attend conference

Minton, Gibbons, Dean

Three of our graduate students presented at the 85th Annual Kansas Association of Historians Conference at Johnson County Community College held on 1-2 April 2011. Jeff Gibbens, a Graduate Assistant in Axe Library Special Collections, Amanda Minton and Mason Lovelace, both Graduate Assistants in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences led a panel discussion, “Teaching the World History Survey: Challenges and Outcomes”. They had the opportunity to interact with professors from most of the Kansas Regents institutions as well as fellow graduate students during the session and at the conference.

They found especially valuable the session they attended that preceded theirs: Teaching the United States History Survey: Ideas and Approaches.”

Pictured are Mrs. Minton and Mr. Gibbens with Dr. Virgil W. Dean, the editor of the state history journal, Kansas History, and a current board member for the organization. Accompanying the students were Professors Kelly Woestman and Judith Shaw. Mrs. Shaw has attended the meeting each and every year she has taught at PSU and Dr. Woestman is a past president of the organization.
